DESIGN ROEL VANDEBEEK

IN COLLABORATION WITH WOUTER TORFS

FOR OBJET PORTRAIT

YEAR 2017

From the way in which OBJET PORTRAIT was created, we can deduce that for Roel every creation is primarily an encounter. It is a dialogue with the other, which can be a person, a community, an environment, an object and so on. Actually, this involves the two most basic human questions. What is the world? Who am I? As human beings it is the task of all of us to find a relationship between these questions. That makes us who we are. We recognize both in Roel's meeting activity as a designer: his open attitude towards the world and his own freedom to interpret it. Nine people are listened to candidly about their way of being in the world. Although they are people 'of the world', with an explicit public image, they are withdrawn from this mundane image. They reflect on their own roots. How do they understand themselves in their way of being?

Armed with this human wealth, Roel then makes his own interpretation of it. He develops two objects for each of these nine people, one applied and one free. One functional, the other symbolic: the two domains, in other words, between which he constantly moves. Each of these objects is, as it were, the 'face' of the people involved in which something of their soul is expressed. But the soul of the designer also takes part in the debate. As the design process proves: it is a long, uncertain, groping road that leads from listening to speaking. Finding this connection is what it comes down to. It is a meeting between two freedoms. Why should such dialogue not be possible? Or is this a utopian idea? That is ultimately the question he confronts us with Objet Portrait.

BETWEEN TWO

In this sculpture you see two movements: a horizontal line that represents everyday life, normality, the work environment, etc. The vertical line refers to private life, spirituality, concealment, etc. These two worlds form a whole while they are actually apart.

BOOK BALANCE

Book Balance reflects the balance which is sought at two levels: between business and private life, and between ratio and unreasonableness. It invites you to participate actively in this tension.

SOAP SERIE

Anyone who knows Tom is aware that he wears rings regularly, some more extravagant than others. These jewels inspired me for a new design and to find a different angle. The fact that Tom is a neat freak could be accommodated perfectly in the design. The soap ring was born and Tom immediately began referring to a Soap Series.

VERZAMELD WERK

Precision, organisation, functionality and hygiene are the basic characteristics of an industrial kitchen but they also apply to Tom’s kitchen. Add an interest for (cook) books and you get Collected Works. Not cook books, but rather the chopping boards that refer to them. Each plank has a function and together they form a team.

DESIGN ROEL VANDEBEEK

IN COLLAB WITH BOKRIJK

YEAR 2018

The disadvantage of cutting a loaf completely is that it dries out faster, that you cannot determine the desired width and that it is loose in the bread bag. If you choose to cut it yourself “on demand”, this often leads to irregular thicknesses and oblique bread cuts.

We solve all these problems with the Broodsnijbakvorm. This shape has built-in ribs that go from the left side through the bottom to the right side. These 4 mm deep “slats” ensure that this rhythm is repeated in the bread itself when baking the bread: left, right and bottom. After baking, you can use this stripe pattern as a guide to work precisely when cutting. This way you can also cut thicker cuts by working in two or three thicknesses. In addition to functionality, this rhythm also gives a nice graphic effect and recognisability to the bread. It is even easy to know how many slices are left because you can count them on the bread.

DESIGN ROEL VANDEBEEK

IN COLLAB WITH GENK

YEAR 2018

This design is part of a larger project for the upgrading of the Molenstraat in Genk (general house style, logo in 3D, green partition, …). The city’s vision was to restore this old shopping street back to its glory, with a particular focus on the crafts. One of the new attractive elements are these Fringe benches (11 pieces) that give the street a new character. These massive oak beams (40 x 40 cm) provide the appearance of purity and tranquility that the street needs. But as you get closer you discover a strong piece of craftsmanship. All benches have an original piece of decor, a fringe. This artisan wood carving consists of flowers, plants, fruit, … even a spell. An old craft unites with a sleek contemporary design in a surprising relationship between the beam and the ornament.

This combination appeals to a very wide audience, the elderly because it is an old technique that they see in a contemporary context, and the young because it is new to them. The benches were therefore made on site by the local woodcarver and, during this process, could count on a lot of attention.

DESIGN ROEL VANDEBEEK

IN COLLAB WITH ODETTE LUNETTES

FOR ODETTE LUNETTES

YEAR 2018

Through a number of conversations, the identity of Odette Lunettes became clear to Roel, allowing him to fully empathize with the philosophy of the brand. The initial question was to develop a kind of 'presentation object' that sellers in different countries can use as a tool to present the glasses to the opticians in an original way. It soon became clear that the presentation object was not the only thing they were looking for. Rather, it was about designing a kind of new 'identity' in general in which the presentation of spectacles during a sales conversation, a display for the opticians and the spectacle case would form one whole.

The new spectacle case is based on Odette’s 'O' and made of thin sheet steel. Due to its unique shape and sobriety it becomes a recognizable icon for the brand. Both the large 'O' and the logo on the side give an extra dimension due to the relief shape that is incorporated in it. The lid does not hinge as you would expect, but slides open and is therefore pleasant to use. The box is available in black and white, in two sizes and always provided with a soft interior.

DESIGN ROEL VANDEBEEK

IN COLLAB WITH AZ SINT-MAARTEN

YEAR 2018

Creating a quiet space in the new hospital in Mechelen offers the opportunity to withdraw with silence as a partner. You can visit this space individually, but certainly also in a group. You can let the silence come to you, but you can also have conversations in small groups. You allow this space to come to yourself, allow you to reflect and think undisturbed. It is a (rest) place that is handed over, that is always present when you need it with the intention of giving you strength.

Not only this space wants to help you with this, but also the silence object that I have designed and created for this. It is a large flat disc that appears to float on the ground. It is a serene, white and quiet object. It doesn’t call for attention, but it is there. However, it is imperfect. A fold does not make this object perfectly flat, a reference to all of us, nobody is perfect. But it is precisely this imperfection that makes it a warm and human object that is close to us. The imperfection gives beauty to this object. It wants to communicate with you, it wants to release something in you, it gives you peace of mind, it lets you discover something.

YEAR 2019

2nd PRICE IN4CARE

The senses of the person with dementia are stimulated by offering tactile, image and sound material. By responding to the living environment of the person with dementia, personal information can be offered. Tests have already been carried out in the residential care center, which showed that the set objectives were achieved. People with dementia are really set in motion and the harp exerts a certain attraction that inspires entire communities. The harp stimulates people with dementia and encourages them to socialize. Memories of the past are retrieved through reminiscence. It is also the intention that the prototype developed in co-creation will be valorised so that it can be offered in various residential care centers, although the possibilities can go much wider than residential care centers alone. The interdisciplinary team consisted of: teachers, researchers and students of nursing and electronics from UC Leuven Limburg, designer Roel Vandebeek, management and staff of WZC Toermalien, Genk.

DESIGN ROEL VANDEBEEK

IN COLLAB WITH WERKHUIZEN HENGELHOEF

FOR ZIEKENHUIS MAAS KEMPEN

YEAR 2017

“Together” is the first word you come across and also the title of this project. Because I cannot possibly decide which words best represent this hospital, I decided to put together a team consisting of employees from different departments of the hospital, from cleaning service to doctor. With this team, which consists of five people, I held several workshops and went through the entire process together. Due to their involvement and the “homework” they were given to solve with their department, in the search for the right words, most departments were already involved in advance, which entailed a social interaction. The work of art began to live before it was even executed.

As a designer, I always start from the identity of the client, institution, municipality, company,… This is also the case with this project about art integration. I try to get into the home of ZMK in terms of the building, the environment, the employees and visitors. What I find particularly important are the different “touch points” that you encounter when you enter the site. But you have to deal with this not only outside, but also in the building.

My idea was to construct very large words that are spread like beacons in the landscape and that, in a small format, could also be found in the hospital. The big words communicate with everyone who enters the domain. They welcome you, make you think, support you. They represent ZMK’s philosophy with its employees and visitors across the site. They are the beacons in the public domain that becomes more human in this way. They meet you and make you forget for a moment that you are in a hospital setting. It’s as if they have always been there.

IN COLLAB WITH BOS+

YEAR 2019

With these Pique Fleurs I want to give the user the opportunity to arrange flowers in a structured way. This design is the result of the Maakbaar project, which investigated how design can contribute to the transition to a sustainable global society. It is an exciting partnership with Flanders DC, OVAM, the Design Museum Ghent and the Peruvian partner AIDER, in which the designers were asked to be inspired by nature to give sustainability a central place in the design and realization of their Products. The technique of the Pique Fleur is inspired by traditional Peruvian wickerwork. For the prototypes I called on local weaver Johnny Ceyssens, who uses willow as the basic material. The old braiding technique is given a modern twist with local plants. This prototype was used as a reference for the braiders in Peru who made their own version of it in their neighborhood. For example, a different technique and different materials can provide a new result in each country. To keep this design as ecological as possible, I recommend buying a used vase at the thrift store.

DESIGN ROEL VANDEBEEK

IN COLLAB WITH 37 GRADEN

FOR JESSA

YEAR 2019

37° aims to develop products that reconnect people. It is a format, a facility that brings different actors closer together, based on an honest idea and with products made by people at a distance from the labor market in sheltered workplaces. In this way, 37° makes both designers and makers more visible and also contributes to the growth process of vulnerable groups in our society. Their products are made locally in response to overseas imports that consumers have no personal connection to. 37° works with a transparent structure and with sustainable materials, as circular or recycled as possible. From their identity and skills, Roel came up with the idea to do something with stickers.

The Dotbook is the result of my interpretation of all input during our joint sessions. Every book is different and together they form one graphic work. With the book and the preformatted dots, Roel provided the makers with a “framework” within which they could be creative themselves, in contrast to the series work and the routine jobs that are usually outsourced to them. In this way the banal activity of pasting is elevated to a personal expression of creativity in a place where you do not expect it. The result for the makers is a better self-image, more self-confidence, fun and pride.

Roel designed the Lifted Table for ceramist Piet Stockmans. Porcelain is subtly integrated into this oak table at the bottom of the legs and reminds you of the elegance of a ballerina. GOOD DESIGN AWARD WINNER AUSTRALIA

The way to market the Jolie Handles brand is unique. It is a combination of sober, stylish products that are produced with great care in a unique traditional way. As a result, they appeal to a specific target group. I have tried to further translate this way of working and to make it more powerful on the basis of new designs with the following points of attention: proportions, image value, emotion, open character, uniqueness and cuddlyness. As a designer, the art is to bring innovation without undermining Jolie’s philosophy. It gives the buyer or user a surprising and new addition to the existing collection, new and old reinforce each other. Jolie’s handles are present, but not dominant.

DESIGN ROEL VANDEBEEK

IN COLLAB WITH Giovanna Massoni and Alexandre Humbert

FOR BELGIUM IS DESIGN

YEAR 2021

Born from the meeting between Giovanna Massoni, curator, and Alexandre Humbert, designer and film director, this movie tells the story of Belgian design at a historical moment that determines an important turning point in its role. Shot between February and April 2021 across Belgium, the film accompanies us through the attitudes, words and gestures of nine protagonists of circular design, reuse, regeneration of resources, new models of organization and production.

One story, nine practices: the stories blend together to create a unity of space and time, building a single voice common to all. The object (the design), assumed here as a starting point, has a variable, vulnerable identity and becomes a pretext for determining the locations in which the narrative is integrated. An agile artifact generated by individual and collective experience, it passes from one hand to another, it adapts, it is shared, it regenerates. The work is (again) open - as Umberto Eco wished (Opera aperta, 1962)

DESIGN ROEL VANDEBEEK

IN COLLAB WITH WOUD

FOR HIDN COLLECTION

YEAR 2022

There are a lot of latent possibilities hidden in fundamental, basic shapes, waiting to be revealed. Based on the archetypal silhouette of a vase, the inspiration for Flowr emanated. With an aim to add an ingenious, purposeful function while enhancing the visual aesthetics, the idea of integrating a flower divider arose. Not as a separate element but by simply taking the material from the vase and form itself. As a natural integrated step in the pro- duction process, the ceramist can effortlessly cut off one or two rings from the top of the finished traditional vase to reposition them at an oblique angle. A design feature that allows you to arrange individual stalks or fascicles of flowers in a vivid yet defined way. This added value is what the HIDN design language is all about.

The HIDN design language

DESIGN ROEL VANDEBEEK

IN COLLAB WITH ATELIER VIERKANT

YEAR 2021

Roel examines and works on the intersection of design and architecture. Surrounded daily by architects in his studio collective near Maastricht, he is confronted with their continuous requests and challenges. In the research of adaptable and portable pots, Atelier Vierkant and Roel Vandebeek decided to cooperate, combining their shared interests. As part of the 2021 collection, Roel presents an innovative series of planters, half wire, half clay. Lightweight, these planters are easily moved around and therefore particularly convenient for apartments, limited sized spaces or anywhere with a specific need for flexibility. The transparency of the wire leaves room for light to shine through, provides airiness and spaciousness to an extent where even the ground underneath the pot is taken into consideration.

FOR MAGNITUDE

YEAR 2022

MUSE DESIGN AWARD

Great ideas often form in good places. For designer and artist Roel Vandebeek (°1970) it was the studios of Magnitude. When he walked around and saw the care with which the beds are made, he was inspired and the idea for Starry Night was born. This wonderful bed fits into Magnitude's tradition of inviting designers for a special design edition. After Jean-François d'Or and Alain Gilles, among others, the honor now fell to compatriot Roel Vandebeek. With his design, Roel evokes the image of a cast-iron bed from days gone by. His contemporary interpretation was given a sleek, pared-down look and a luxurious execution with subtle details. With the name Starry Night, Roel transports you to a French attic room, ready for a fairytale night of stargazing. On the webpage you can enjoy a film in which Roel Vandebeek explains more about the breeding ground of his designs.

Starry Night is available in two types of fabric both of which add an extra dimension to the design. The Lainosa Fabric has the sophisticated look of a wool felt fabric made from 100% polyester. Lainosa was selected in a total of six shades, from neutral beige, warm brown, stylish anthracite, inspiring midnight blue to a bright orange. The Eternal Velvet Fabric creates extra depth thanks to the velour with mohair look. This fabric also comes in six shades: neutral ecru, chic anthracite, bronzy gold, absinthe green, warm orange and dreamy azure. With the darker colours, the play between presence and absence is more exciting. The lighter colours, on the other hand, more quickly evoke the secure feeling of nostalgic memory.

Roel Vandebeek found the inspiration for Starry Night during a visit to the Magnitude studios. “What struck me most was how great their passion and expertise is in the field of upholstery and stitching. In my design I wanted to translate this craft into an archetypal image of the past: the antique French cast-iron bed. This image is in the collective memory, which immediately evokes a sense of recognition and memory. And if you can actualize such an archetype and let it be reborn with contemporary techniques, you have the best of both worlds: the sense of security of the past intertwined with the luxury and comfort of today.’

By ‘projecting’ the image of the French bed onto a tightly upholstered foot and headboard, ‘then’ and ‘now’ are brought together. With the right choice of fabric and filling, elegant lines are created thanks to the shadow play with the stitching seam. The signature of the Magnitude craft becomes, as it were, a means of communication between bed and person.

Starting from the archetype of the table, this design was materialized by working with clay tablets. Each tablet has its unique story to tell. The purity of the clay contrasts nicely with the slim, brass legs, which, due to the color and surface treatment, are added like a jewel. Both materials respect and reinforce each other, it is from this symbiosis that the strength of this design arises. The smart base makes it possible to use and combine different sizes of clay tablets, an extra freedom at the service of the user. DESIGN ROEL VANDEBEEK

IN COLLAB WITH DECOLINE

YEAR 2022

Roman blinds remain a popular form of window decoration. They are therefore both functional and highly decorative and can be perfectly matched to the interior like no other type of window decoration. Roman blinds fit in very sleek modern as well as in classic interiors, depending on the choice of finish. The system is pulled up with the tubes in the roman blind. So they have a practical function. But the tubes are certainly also decorative. Although a standard roman blind is made with tubes at the back so that only a seam is visible at the front, tubes at the front are also increasingly being chosen. This gives a nice result, especially for a fabric with a pattern. But also for a solid fabric, tubes at the front are a good choice and provide a playful character.

Why should the tubes only be functional? Letting creativity run wild it's possible to add tubes to create an original pattern for an original and unique result.

YEAR 2022

Have a look at Tabl. Can you spot the hidden part? A circular part of the classic cylindrical base has been cut out and transformed into a functional tabletop. Consequently leaving a round, open space in the foundation. Creating a strong visual silhouette. With this playful and tangible approach, we efficiently optimize the material by providing the design with a new function without adding additional material. We deliberately optimize the production process as the laser cutter can create the base and top simultaneously. And we responsibly reduce waste in an earlier stage as the shapes from the opening and the top recur.

YEAR 2022

As the name refers to, Booklght unites a bookshelf and a lamp in an honest and transparent way. Subtly merging two common functions. Booklght illustrates a different take on the HIDN design language. By implementing the HIDN approach as a natural part of the design process, the opportunity for integrating a lamp into a shelf was revealed to the designer. He found a hidden idea to add a new function. The result is a playful and distinctive design that leaves you with a moment of wonder.

Made from the same piece of metal, the additional material, that has been added to form the lampshade, is added at the right moment of the production phase to optimize the process. Also, with this combination of two products in one, there is only one production, one packaging and one transportation
