DESIGN ROEL VANDEBEEK
IN COLLABORATION WITH Jongform International
YEAR 2002
This design owes its name to its sturdy 'body'. Asturdy and low seat that offers an unusual amount of comfort and guaranteescosiness. Only a thin chromed metal frame keeps distance between the seatingarea and the floor. This frame, as it were, carries the different elements of'Body'. However, its massiveness is radically broken by the fact that bothlarge armrests are lifted to the correct height via this thin frame. It is thiscontradiction that gives it a surprising and playful element and creates thisstrong, unique image.

YEAR 2003
The St. Martin's Church is a listed monument that hasbeen completely restored on both the outside and the inside under thesupervision of architect Herman van Meer from Hasselt. The nave of the churchdates from the end of the eighteenth century. In 1891 the nave was enlargedwith two aisles and a choir. I was asked to help with the interior, designingall the furniture, from the altar to the radiator cabinets. But the churchchair, a project chair for the Drisag company from Herentals, is also one of mydesigns. The new arrangement of space and furniture aims to respond to thecontemporary vision of people, faith and liturgy. Its sober design forms a nicecontrast with this historic building and all its ornaments. Old and new reinforce each other.

The design is based on the archetype of a chair and isgiven an extra dimension by the rectangular profile. This makes the chairrather robust from the side view, while it looks very slim and elegant from thefront. This contrast, together with the colored wooden slats, provides theunique character. All aluminum profiles are specially developed for thisfurniture line.

FOR HOUSE OF TOURISM MECHELEN
YEAR 2003
On behalf of architect Herman van Meer, Roel was askedfor a solution for decorating a large structural element (length 6 meters) inthe tourism house. To 'ease' and break through this heavy tension, it wascompletely covered with bristles. This creates a tactile wall that the visitorcan touch and feel, a separation that is open and closed. It is as if theconcrete beam has been specially constructed to create this installation, whileit is the other way around.

IN COLLABORATION WITH WOLTERS MABEG
YEAR 2006
Openings in a U-shape are milled out in the flat sides of the table. Then these elements are pushed in like lips. In this way they form a suspension system on which the glass top can rest. No additional support is required. What is present is used. The usefulness is also decoration. The openings lend an airy rhythm to the otherwise impersonal side, without disturbing the geometry. Ornament is really construction. Or conversely, construction itself is ornament. Both are reconciled in this object, while they are often a contradiction.
