IN COLLABORATION WITH WOLTERS MABEG

YEAR 2006

With Ensemble, Roel Vandebeek designed a highly innovative concept of benches by using standard elements in combination with customization, offering unprecedented possibilities for the architect or designer. The fresh and dynamic design of the benches and other products in this collection will upgrade any streetcorner or public area with social contact as its main focus. Through the use of FSC-labeled wood material and the addition of unassembled products, Ensemble provides not only an economic value but more so an ecological. The range consists of a garbage bin, bicycle rack, sidewalk and a fence pole.

This graphic accent also immediately indicates the hanging point of the towel. Quick hanging on the wall or apron is no longer a problem. Both during use and when hanging, this accent gives a strong image. The Spot Towel is complemented by an apron, potholder and tablecloth, among others.

DESIGN ROEL VANDEBEEK

IN COLLABORATION WITH BIB GENK

YEAR 2008

Centrally located in the entrance hall of the Genk library is this small-scale monument that pays tribute to the book as such. It is a plinth that, as it were, emerges from the floor, guiding every visitor to it like a pilgrim. A book by artist Ado Hamelryck is kept in the transparent cupboard. It is open on a random page. Ado Hamelryck 'draws' or 'writes' books full of characters. Every week the librarian turns a page so that regular visitors can read the entire book after years. This gives it a secret or sacred dimension. All roads in the library lead to this 'holy' book.

This design owes its name to the rear legs between which the back support and the crossbar are placed. It is these open legs that provide transparency and give the chair a fresh, light appearance. The clamps also ensure that it becomes a constructively well-thought-out and sturdy whole.

DESIGN ROEL VANDEBEEK

IN COLLABORATION WITH MARK MILISSEN & C-MINE

YEAR 2012

What do you mean, Design? is a unique collaboration project that runs in several technical schools in Limburg and is a project initated by Mark Milissen and Roel. Under the guidance of six contemporary designers, students from technical and professional departments go through the different phases of a design project and ultimately arrive at a new design. Questioning existing products and forms is central. The various intermediate steps and the end result of the development process can be seen in the exhibition. The project turned out to be a bull's-eye for students, teachers and designers alike. “We encouraged the young people to develop their own creative design idea,” says Roel Vandebeek. “By inventing and creating themselves, these professionals of the future experience the everyday applicability of design. Their self-esteem, involvement and opportunities on the labor market also increase. The project shows that design provides added value in many more domains than just form.”

During the repurposing of the old town hall in Eisden, the attic floor is also being tackled. The multitude of metal trusses demand their attention. To undermine this, Roel has added brass in some places. In this way, the trusses become the support of this installation.

DESIGN ROEL VANDEBEEK

IN COLLABORATION WITH ART & ADVICE

YEAR 2013

In the context of the international art biennale Manifesta, which took place in Waterschei (B) in 2012, 25 leading Limburg artists were asked to translate their vision on migration into an image, starting from a suitcase.

This object is a reminder of all the emigrants who left their homeland in the last century to come and work in the mines. The suitcase, as it were, bundles all their hopes. When they leave, these expats are filled with expectations, illusions and dreams of the future. But their prospects soon narrow. The realization of emptiness and loss takes its place. Because a lot of warmth was also left behind: a home, family ties, the traditional way of life... Little or nothing remains of the original contents of the suitcase. The lines reinforce the tragedy of this trajectory.

The object also becomes a metaphor for the life journey we all make. What remains at the terminus of the suitcase of expectations with which we once boarded the train of life?

Let’s talk about your project
